What the app is for

Sun Position is a sun and moon planner. It works out where the sun and moon will be at a given place and time, and shows that as a camera overlay, a map and a set of daily time figures. The listing puts photographers first, but it also names astrophotographers, people viewing houses, gardeners, solar installers and anyone outdoors who needs to plan around daylight.

Most of its use is before a trip or a shoot. You check where the sun will set from a spot you have not visited yet, or whether a building casts a shadow over a planned panel site.

Seeing sun and moon paths through the camera

The AR camera view overlays the sun, moon and Milky Way paths on whatever the phone camera is pointed at. You can see, for example, which part of the sky the sun will cross above a particular building or field, and where the Milky Way core will sit for a night shoot.

The sun path map gives the same information without the camera. It plots the day's sun and moon directions around a chosen location, so you can compare the two bodies' positions from a single screen.

Daily sunrise, sunset and light times

For today, the app lists sunrise, sunset, golden hour, blue hour, twilight, moonrise, moonset and the current moon phase. These are the times that matter for timing a photo, a hike back to the car or a drone flight that has to end before dark.

A home screen widget shows today's sunrise and sunset without opening the app. The calculations run offline, and time zones are set automatically for whatever location you choose. The listing marks these features as free.

Planning sites, gardens and outdoor trips

Sun Position is built around checking a specific spot. Prospective house buyers can see whether the kitchen or the garden gets evening sun. Gardeners can find the sunniest and shadiest beds for vegetables, and solar panel planners can check whether trees or nearby buildings will block the sun.

Campers, hikers, sailors and drone pilots can use the sunrise, sunset and twilight times to plan around daylight. Photographers can arrive before the sun comes up or time a shoot for golden hour.
