What the swisstopo app is for

The swisstopo app puts the Federal Office of Topography's national maps on a phone, for people planning or doing hikes, cycling, snow sports and flights in Switzerland. Map scales run from 1:10 000 for close detail to 1:1 million for regional overviews.

The listing says all functions and offline use are free, with no advertising and no login.

Planning hiking, ski and cycling routes

The map layers include official hiking, mountain hiking and alpine hiking trails, snowshoe and ski routes, and SwitzerlandMobility routes. Closures of hiking trails are shown on the same map, as are public transport stops for getting to a trailhead.

Current aerial imagery sits alongside historical maps, so you can see how a landscape or a route has changed over time.

Recording, importing and sharing your own tours

You can draw a tour yourself, record one as you go, or import one and share it. Tours are tagged as hiking, cycling or mountain biking, and you can set your personal pace. The tour guide shows your arrival time and remaining distance.

Offline maps are available from 1:25 000 to 1:1 million, so a tour can be followed without a connection. Panorama mode shows a recorded tour in 3D. Markers can be saved with notes and shared.

Measuring, comparing and searching the map

Measure and compare tools work on the map itself. Search finds geographical names, addresses or coordinates.

The listing also lets you report changes to maps and geodata, which feeds back into the official data.

Aviation charts and drone flight restrictions

The aviation section includes aeronautical charts showing obstacles and airspaces, plus landing sites. Restrictions for drones and model aircraft are listed here as well.

This section is aimed at pilots, drone flyers and model aircraft operators who need to check where they may fly.
