What Taiwan Radio does and who it is for

Taiwan Radio is an app for listening to radio over the internet instead of on a dedicated radio receiver. It runs on Android phones, tablets and Android TV boxes, so the device you already have can stand in for a radio on a desk or in a kitchen.

The app suits someone who wants to hear radio at home or on the go without buying hardware, and who is happy to keep a network connection running while listening. Playback is the whole purpose; the listing describes no other content or features.

Listening on phones, tablets and Android TV

The app plays radio through a network connection, so the device needs to be online while it plays. The listing names phones, tablets and Android TV as the places it runs, which means a television with Android TV can be used as a radio in the same way as a handheld device.

Because the audio comes over the network, the app does not depend on a local broadcast signal. The listing presents this as the reason it can replace a physical radio.

Keeping streams running over Wi-Fi and in battery savers

When listening over Wi-Fi, the developer says playback can stop after a while if the phone goes to sleep. To prevent this, the listing asks you to open the Wi-Fi advanced settings and set the option to keep Wi-Fi on during sleep to Always.

Cleaning or battery-saving apps can also cut off playback. The listing asks you to add Taiwan Radio to the whitelist in those apps so the stream is not stopped in the background.

Network use while streaming

The listing notes that playing a station causes a slight increase in network usage compared with a device that is idle. It does not give a figure for how much data a listening session uses, so the amount will depend on how long you listen and your connection.
