A plain file editor for notes and text documents
Text Editor is an app for opening, changing and saving text documents on Android. It handles plain text, HTML and RTF, so one app can open a TXT note, an HTML file or a formatted RTF document. It can keep several files open at once, each in its own window, and can show two of them side by side.
The app is supported by ads, which can be closed or turned off in Settings. The developer says no ads appear while editing.
Opening, saving and changing encoding for HTML, RTF and TXT
The editor opens HTML, RTF and any plain text file such as TXT, and saves changes back in the same format. New documents can be created from scratch. The developer also lists support for very large files.
The charset or encoding of a file can be changed. This matters for text saved in an encoding other than the one the device expects.
Working on several documents in separate windows
More than one document can be open at the same time, with each one in its own window. Two of them can be placed side by side in split-screen, which suits comparing a draft with a source file or copying between two notes.
A list of recently opened documents gives quick access to files used last. Full screen mode is also available for working without the rest of the interface.
Formatting notes with fonts, colors, images and links
Selected text can be set to bold, italic, underline or strike-through. Its font, size, color, highlight, typeface and alignment can also be changed, and selected text can be switched to uppercase or lowercase.
Images and links can be inserted into a document. The dark theme follows the Android system setting, so the editor switches to dark when the device does.
Reading text aloud, printing and counting words
Text-to-speech can read a selected passage, or everything from the cursor onward. This is useful for listening back to a long note or draft.
Documents can be printed, and a word count is available for the current text.
