What Text Reader turns into audio

Text Reader is a text to speech app that reads text aloud, word for word, in more than 70 languages. It works on articles, documents, ebooks and messages, and the listing names PDFs among the document types.

The stated purpose is listening in place of reading. The listing points to resting the eyes, cutting screen time, and getting through text while commuting, exercising, cooking or working with your hands.

Listening with the screen off

Playback continues with the screen locked. You can pause, skip and adjust from the lock screen, from the notification panel, or through a Bluetooth headset or speaker.

Because the screen can stay off, the listing presents this as a way to save battery.

Voices, speed and pitch

Both male and female voices are offered. Pitch can be raised or lowered to change how the chosen voice sounds.

Speed runs from slow up to 3x. The listing suggests the faster settings for skimming and the slower ones for careful listening.

Following the text and picking up where you stopped

Follow-along highlighting marks each word as it is spoken, so you can see your place in the text while listening.

Repeat mode loops the current passage so you can hear it again. The app remembers where you left off, so reopening a text resumes from that point.
