True Edge: Edge Lighting & AOD

What True Edge does on an OLED lock screen

True Edge is an Always On Display and notification light app for Android phones with OLED or AMOLED screens. When a notification comes in, it lights the screen edges and lock screen with an animated effect. That is the job a hardware notification LED did on older phones.

The developer, newGen Mobile, files it under Personalization.

Screen off until an alert, to save battery

Most Always On Display apps keep the screen lit all day. True Edge keeps it dark until a notification arrives, then runs the light effect. The developer presents this idle-off design as the reason it saves battery.

Edge light styles for notifications

The styles fall into three groups. Particle styles are Starfield, Galaxy, Bubbles and Fireball. Classic styles are Smooth Orbit, Pulse and Tide, which produce wave-like lighting. Tech and fun styles are Scanner, Glitch, Morse Code and Snake, which are retro-style animations.

The listing says the styles can be customized in real time.

Who the notification light suits

It suits someone who wants visible alerts without a constantly lit screen. It also suits someone who wants animated edge lighting on the lock screen instead of standard popups. The listing names OLED and AMOLED screens as the target hardware.
