What UBS TWINT is for
UBS TWINT is a mobile payment app from UBS AG for paying and moving money from a smartphone in Switzerland. The developer says it is the most widely used mobile payment app in the country, with well over one million registrations.
It suits people who want to pay for parking, shop at Coop or Migros, or pay someone back without using cash or coins.
Sending, requesting and receiving money
You can send money to friends, family and colleagues, request money from them, and receive money from them, all from the phone. The developer lists this person-to-person transfer as the core function of the app.
Requests are useful for splitting a shared cost, since the other person can pay the amount you asked for. Receiving works the same way in reverse.
Paying in online shops
At checkout you can scan a QR code shown on the store's page, or switch to the TWINT app to approve the payment. The developer names ticketcorner.ch, microspot.ch, SBB, Coop, Swisscom and Migros as places where this works.
Contactless payment at physical shops and parking meters is also listed, so the same app covers both online and in-person purchases.
KeyClub points and the UBS credit card
Payments made through TWINT can earn KeyClub points, but only when they are charged to a UBS credit card you have registered in the app. Without a registered card, the points part of the app does not apply.
The points are a separate benefit on top of the payments themselves, so they matter most to people who already pay with that card.
Digital vouchers and credit as gifts
The app lets you buy digital vouchers and credit, either for yourself or as a gift for someone else. You can also send and receive them in the same way as money.
The listing does not describe which merchants accept the vouchers, so check that before buying one for a specific shop.
