What the app is for and who it suits
Virtual SIM gives you a phone number from a selected country and lets you make and receive calls and texts on it from any location. The numbers are the main point: the developer lists real mobile and landline numbers from the US and EU, so people who need a number in those countries without carrying a second phone have a direct way to get one.
The listing describes the app as a way to stay reachable on that number while travelling or living elsewhere. It is aimed at anyone who needs a US or EU number for calls and texts, and at people who want to call other countries cheaply from it.
Renting a US or EU number monthly
Numbers are rented on a monthly basis, and the listing says you can cancel at any time with no long-term commitment. Each rented number handles both calls and SMS.
The listing states that registering for social networks with these numbers is not guaranteed to work.
Calling abroad and calls between app users
Calls to more than 120 countries are billed per minute, with rates starting at $0.04 a minute, according to the listing. Calls and chat between Virtual SIM users are free, so you can reach other people with the app without paying per minute.
Because the rates are per minute, the cost of an outgoing call depends on the destination. The listing gives $0.04 as the starting rate and does not list the rate for each country.
Notifications and availability for each number
Push notifications alert you to incoming calls and messages, so you can see them without keeping the app open. You can set availability on each number to available, busy or offline, which controls how that number presents itself to callers.
Because availability is set per number, a person with more than one rented number can handle each one separately.
