What WorldRemit is for
If you need to send money to family or a business overseas and would rather not queue at a bank counter, this is a remittance app built for that job. The developer says sending is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, from wherever you happen to be.
The listing puts the reach at 50 to more than 100 countries. Which receiving options you see depends on where the money is going, so the choice of payout method is the first thing that shapes a transfer.
It suits people sending regular or one-off payments abroad who want the money to land in a bank account, a mobile wallet or a cash counter. It is not described as a general banking app.
How the money reaches the receiver
The app offers four ways to deliver money: cash pickup, mobile money, bank transfer and airtime top-up. Which of these appear depends on the destination country.
The listing gives examples. In Uganda, cash can be collected at Bank of Africa, Centenary Bank or Airtel, and money can go to Airtel or MTN mobile money accounts or to bank accounts such as Housing Finance Bank. In the Philippines, the named wallets include GCash, Maya and CoinsPH, and cash pickup is listed at BDO Unibank and Cebuana Lhuillier.
For Ghana the listing names MTN, Airtel Tigo and Vodafone mobile money, along with Zenith Bank and Fidelity Bank. For Kenya it names M-Pesa, Airtel and Equity Bank for mobile money, and cash pickup at Equity Bank and Diamond Trust Bank. The developer also says transfers are possible to Cameroon, Nigeria, India, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and others.
Paying for a transfer
The app lists several ways to pay for the transfer itself. These are card (debit, credit or prepaid), Apple Pay, Klarna (Sofort), iDEAL, Interac, Poli, Trustly and mobile money.
The methods you can use depend on the country you are registered in, according to the listing. A sender in one country may see Interac or iDEAL, while a sender elsewhere may see only cards and mobile money.
Paying by mobile money is the one option the listing ties to the wallets used on the receiving side too, so it can suit people who already keep their money in a wallet.
Fees, the first transfers and rate alerts
The developer says the first three transfers are free when the code 3FREE is entered. After that, the listing states that the app charges low fees for each transfer.
The app can also send daily notifications about exchange rates. The listing presents this as a way to choose a sending day, so a sender who is not in a hurry can wait for a better rate.
The listing does not give any fee amounts, so the only figures available are the free-transfer offer and the word low.
Transfer times, alerts and security
The developer says 95 per cent of its July 2022 transfers were authorised within 60 minutes. Authorisation is the listing's word, and the figure is for one month only.
Once a transfer is sent, the sender and the receiver each get a text message and an email saying the money is on its way. This is the only tracking the listing describes.
On security, the listing refers to multi-level protection and says customer data is encrypted around the clock. It gives no further detail on how this works.
