What Xmind is for and who uses it
Xmind is a mind mapping and brainstorming app that the developer says has been built over 19 years. It is aimed at group work, and the listing names departmental brainstorming, agile project management and group assignments as typical uses.
Most of its stated features are about several people working on one set of ideas. They cover editing, storage, sharing rights and presenting, and each is described below.
Editing and commenting on a map together
The online editing feature lets more than one person work on a map at the same time, and people can leave comments on it. The developer lists this as the main way teams use the app for brainstorming sessions and shared planning.
Because edits and comments happen on the same map, a group does not need to pass around separate copies to combine their ideas.
Cloud storage, version history and syncing
Changes are saved to cloud storage automatically. The developer says earlier versions are tracked, so a map can be rolled back through its history.
Maps can be opened on any device that has the app, anytime and from anywhere. The developer says this is done while safeguarding privacy, without going into detail on how.
Controlling who can view or change a map
A map can be set to view-only, so others can read it but not change it. Editing rights can also be given to specific people instead of everyone with access.
Password protection is available on top of these settings. The permission controls are the part of the app meant for sharing maps outside a single team.
Brainstorming, outlining and presenting ideas
Xmind offers three ways to work on the same material: brainstorming, mind mapping and an outline view. A person can start with loose ideas and organize them into a structured map later, or switch to the outline to see the same content as a list.
A finished map can be presented as slides, so the diagram itself can be used in a meeting without being rebuilt in a separate presentation tool.
