This page needs its stylesheet to be shown

The app listing, the version table and the download step are laid out by this site’s stylesheet. With stylesheets switched off, or blocked before they arrive, none of that layout exists, so the page is not shown.

日本経済新聞紙面ビューアー: Nikkei newspaper pages as printed

By Irfan Rosli

News editor

Printed pages of the morning and evening editions, 30 days back
Regional economy pages and specialist papers in the same viewer
Save articles to read on a PC, phone or tablet
Keyword alerts that highlight matching articles on the page
Download pages to read, search and save with no signal
Image quality chosen from three levels to suit storage

What this Nikkei viewer is for

此 is a viewer for the Nihon Keizai Shimbun as it is printed, rather than a text-only news reader. It is aimed at people who already subscribe to the Nikkei Digital Edition, the print Nihon Keizai Shimbun with a Nikkei ID, or one of the specialist papers, and who want to read the paper page by page on Android.

Sign-in is needed. The listing says the app works only for people with a Nikkei ID that can read the pages, and that the paid subscriptions must be in place before use.

Reading back issues and regional pages

The viewer covers the morning and evening editions of the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, and the pages go back 30 days. Each page is shown as it appears in print, so layout and photos stay where the editors placed them.

Regional economy pages and the specialist papers are included, so readers can move from national news to local business coverage without switching products.

Saving articles and tracking keywords

Articles can be saved as favourites. The listing says saved items can also be opened on a PC, a smartphone or a tablet, so a story saved on the commute can be read again on another device.

Keywords can be registered in the app. Any article that contains a registered word is highlighted on the page, which makes it quicker to find company names, markets or topics that matter to a particular reader.

Offline reading and image quality

Pages can be downloaded ahead of time. Once downloaded, reading, searching and saving articles work without a signal, which the listing gives as an example of a basement or underground location.

Image quality can be set to one of three levels. A higher setting suits a reader who wants clearer page images, and a lower one keeps the downloaded pages smaller on the device.
