What the American Airlines app covers on a trip

This is the official airline app for passengers on American Airlines flights. It is built around the stages of a trip, from booking through check-in, the airport, the flight and arrival, so the screens you need change as you move through it. The home screen works out where you are in that sequence and puts the matching tools in front of you.

Most of the features depend on having a reservation with American Airlines. Some, such as upgrade purchases and the AAdvantage account view, are tied to your own booking or membership.

Checking in and getting flight alerts on your phone

You check in for a trip inside the app and retrieve a mobile boarding pass. The pass updates as your trip changes, so you do not need to print anything before you reach the gate.

To receive flight updates, you retrieve your reservation and allow the app to send notifications to your phone. Those alerts cover changes to the latest status of the flight.

Finding gates, lounges and your bag at the airport

The interactive terminal maps show the layout of each airport terminal. You can locate the nearest Admirals Club lounge or request directions to your connecting gate from the same screen.

Bag tracking follows your checked bag from the moment it leaves your hands until you reach your final destination. It is useful for knowing whether a bag is still on its way or has arrived.

Changing your seat and requesting upgrades

You can select a new seat or change an existing one directly in the app, without calling or visiting the airport counter. The choice takes effect at once when the seat is available.

Upgrades can be requested and purchased in the app. It also shows the upgrade standby list, which becomes visible within four hours of your scheduled departure, so you can see where you sit on it.

AAdvantage account, saved trips and in-flight Wi-Fi

The app shows the details of your AAdvantage account, and it has a sign-up route for people who are not yet members. Recently viewed reservations are saved automatically, so details for your next flight are quick to find.

On flights that offer Wi-Fi, the app and aa.com can be used at no cost to check flight information and to watch movies and TV shows. The listing gives 800-222-2377 as the contact number for American Airlines.

You now have more flexibility during travel disruptions. If your flight is delayed or canceled, you may now have the option to join standby for another flight in the app while keeping your confirmed flight. You can also check your standby status and remove your standby request in the app.
