What the chord finder is for
The app identifies the chords in a song as it plays, so you do not have to search the web for chord charts. It is aimed at two kinds of user: a beginner who wants to play a favourite song, and an experienced musician who needs to transcribe the chords in a passage that uses unusual ones.
The listing describes a free version that recognizes basic chord types only: major and minor, augmented and diminished, 7th and M7th, and suspended chords (sus2 and sus4).
Detecting chords from music around you
Chord ai takes its input from the audio coming out of your device, which the listing says includes any video or audio streaming service, and it can also pick up music played live near the phone. Detection runs as the song plays, and the listing says the results appear instantly.
Once a chord is identified, the app shows where to put your fingers on a guitar, piano or ukulele. The listing says its chord recognition is more precise than that of other apps, a claim the developer makes and that this page does not test.
Tempo, beats and key for transcribing
The app also reports the tempo in beats per minute and detects the beats, which helps when you are matching a song's pace. Tonality detection gives the key the music is built around, next to the chords.
Together these features suit transcription work: a musician can check the tempo and key while working out the chord changes of a song that is hard to follow by ear.
Lyrics aligned to the recording
Chord ai recognizes the lyrics of a song and aligns them with the recording, so each line lines up with the point in the track where it is sung. Players can follow the words and the chords together while the song plays.
