Learning C and C++ programming on an Android phone
Cxxdroid is a development environment for writing, compiling and running C and C++ programs directly on an Android device. The developer presents it as an educational tool, so it suits people learning either language who want to practise without a computer.
Sample programs are included, so there is code to open and run from the start. Programs are compiled on the phone itself.
Compiling and running programs without internet
The compiler works offline, so a connection is not needed to build and run C or C++ code. The developer says the same compiler both analyses and compiles the code, and that a runtime error in your program should not bring down the IDE.
The listing states that this is a true compiler, not a Java or JavaScript interpreter, and that inline assembly is supported using Clang syntax. The interface is built around running a program with few steps, without hard-to-remember shortcuts or multi-finger touch combinations.
Adding Boost, SQLite and graphics libraries
A package manager installs prebuilt libraries from a repository the developer maintains. The listed examples are Boost, SQLite, ncurses and libcurl, which cover data storage, networking and terminal user interfaces.
For graphics and games, SDL2, SFML and Allegro are available. Installing them through the package manager means you do not have to build each library yourself.
Interactive mode and the built-in terminal
A REPL mode, based on CERN's Cling interpreter, lets you enter C or C++ statements one at a time and see results immediately. It is useful for testing a line of code before putting it into a full program.
A full-featured terminal emulator sits alongside the editor, so you can run command-line tools and view program output without leaving the app.
Compile speed and compiler caching
The developer uses advanced compiler caching to shorten build times. The listing reports up to 33 times faster compiles when the Boost library is used, and a 3x average speedup overall.
These are the developer's own figures and have not been independently measured here.
What's new
Clang is now at version 23
Libraries updated, SFML is now 3.x
