What the Tamil keyboard is for

Desh Tamil Keyboard is an Android keyboard for people who write in Tamil and English on the same phone. Its main job is letting you switch between the two without leaving the typing screen.

The language key sits to the left of the space bar. Turning it on gives you English-to-Tamil suggestions as you type. Turning it off keeps the keyboard in plain English for the rest of your message.

Ways to enter Tamil text

Tanglish mode takes English letters and converts them into Tamil words, so you can type Tamil with a standard Latin layout. Voice mode converts speech into Tamil text. Handwriting mode lets you draw Tamil letters on the screen. Alphabet mode has you pick each Tamil character directly.

Long-pressing the language key opens a menu for choosing between English, Alphabets and Handwriting. The listing does not describe the Voice or Tanglish modes as part of that menu.

Stickers, fonts and the emoji row

The keyboard includes stickers that work in WhatsApp and other messaging apps. You can make your own from a photo, write text stickers, or browse and share stickers taken from your WhatsApp chats.

Stylish fonts and a dedicated emoji row sit alongside the stickers, so you can dress up a message and insert an emoji without opening a separate panel.

Customising layout, clipboard and dictionary

Themes change the colour and background of the keyboard, and you can use your own photos as the background. The settings also let you add a number row and an emoji row, adjust vibration and sound, and set long-press symbols.

A clipboard keeps copied text within reach for copy and paste. A personal dictionary stores the words you use, so the keyboard can suggest them later.
