What ELM327 Test is for

ELM327 Test is a diagnostic checker for ELM327 adapters, the devices that plug into a car's OBD2 socket and pass data to a phone. Its main job is to confirm that the adapter itself works, so a fault can be traced to the adapter or ruled out. The developer lists it for people who own one of these adapters and want to check it or find out what it can talk to.

Testing the adapter and its connection

You connect the adapter to the car's OBD2 socket, then pair it in your Android Bluetooth settings or join the WiFi network the adapter creates. In the app you select the paired device and press Start Test. When the test ends, the results show whether the device operates correctly or has a connection problem, a protocol problem, or a hardware failure.

The test is the same whichever link you use, so it can help when an adapter pairs but returns no data. The developer describes the results as the place to look for the cause.

Identifying adapter firmware and car protocols

The app reports which ELM327 firmware version the adapter runs. The versions it lists run from v1.0 through v1.1, v1.2, v1.3, v1.3a, v1.4, v1.4b, v2.0, v2.1 and v2.2.

It also checks which OBD2 protocol your vehicle uses. The protocols it names are ISO 9141-2, ISO 14230-4 KWP 2000 and its FAST variant, ISO 15765-4 CAN-BUS, SAE J1939 CAN, SAE J1850 PWM and SAE J1850 VPW. A car uses one of these, and the detection step shows which.

Reading supported PIDs and the chassis number

After the test, the View available commands button lists every PID command your vehicle supports. PIDs are the individual data requests the car answers, so this list shows what the adapter can ask the car for.

The app also displays the chassis number of the vehicle. Both the PID list and the chassis number come from the car through the adapter, so they depend on a working connection.
