Running GBA and GBC games on Android

John GBAC is an emulator for Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Color games. It does not include any games, and the listing says it does not work without game files you already own and keep on your device. The developer describes it as a successor to John GBA and John GBC, and says it is fully compatible with both.

The listing describes an original GBA/GBC engine and high quality rendering. Ads appear in the free version, and the listing offers a paid purchase to remove them.

Finding and loading game files

The app searches SD card and internal storage for game files, so you do not have to browse to each one by hand. It accepts zipped game files as well as unzipped ones.

For cloud storage, the listing says Dropbox support works through a separate app called John DataSync, which must also be installed.

On-screen controls, controllers and key mapping

A virtual on-screen keypad covers the touchscreen. The layout of that keypad can be fully customized, and individual keys can be reassigned.

Physical controllers are supported over Bluetooth, including MOGA controllers. Turbo buttons send rapid repeated presses while a button is held.

Save states, cheats and screenshots

Save states record the game at any point and show a preview image so you can pick the right one to load. Cheats can be applied to a running game.

Fast forward and slow motion

The game speed can be changed between x0.25 and x16. Fast forward gets through slow sections quickly, and slow motion helps with tricky timing.

The speed control is set in the app during play, alongside the other in-game options.
