What John NESS is and who it suits

John NESS is a multi emulator for Android from John emulators. It does not include any games, so it only works once you have loaded game files of your own. The listing describes an original engine and high-quality rendering.

It is aimed at people who already have game files on their device and want to play them on a phone or tablet, with an on-screen keypad or a paired controller. The listing puts the app at 1,000,000+ installs and a 3.69 star average from 9,486 ratings. Ads appear in the app, and removing them is a separate in-app purchase called "remove ads".

Loading game files from storage or Dropbox

The app searches the SD card and internal storage for game files, so you do not have to point it at each file by hand. It can open files stored in zip archives directly.

Game files can also be read from Dropbox. That feature needs a second app, John DataSync, installed alongside John NESS.

Controls: on-screen keypad, keys and controllers

A virtual keypad sits on the screen during play. Its layout can be fully rearranged, and each key can be assigned to a different button.

Turbo buttons repeat a press automatically while held, which suits games that need rapid button input. A Bluetooth controller, including MOGA models, can be used in place of the touch keypad.

Save states, playback speed and screenshots

Save states record the game at any point and show a preview image, so you can pick the right one to load later. Playback speed can be raised up to 16 times normal or lowered to a quarter of normal, which covers both skipping ahead and slowing down hard sections.
