What the phonemic chart is for

LearnEnglish Sounds Right is an interactive English pronunciation chart built around the phonemic alphabet. It is aimed at two groups: learners who struggle with English sounds or with reading phonemic symbols, and teachers who use phonemic script to correct their students' pronunciation.

The listing presents it as free. Learners can use it on a phone or tablet whenever they want to practise, without a class.

Hearing each sound and its example words

Each symbol on the chart plays its sound when you tap it, so you can match the written symbol to what it sounds like. A downward arrow next to a sound opens three example words that contain it.

This is the part a learner would use most: check a symbol you do not recognise, hear it, then hear it again inside three ordinary words.

How the vowels and diphthongs are arranged

The pure vowels follow the same layout as the standard IPA vowel chart. Position depends on mouth shape: moving left to right runs from lips spread wide to lips rounded, and moving top to bottom runs from a closed jaw to an open one.

The diphthongs are grouped in rows by their second sound, so a glide that ends in the same vowel sits in the same row.

Using the chart in a classroom

Teachers can install the app on a class set of tablets or on students' own devices. From there they can teach individual sounds and their symbols one at a time, using the same tap-to-hear chart the students have.
