What Magnifier does with the phone camera

Magnifier uses the camera on your phone as a magnifying tool for text and objects. The developer lists three main uses: enlarging small print, reading faraway text such as street signs or a menu behind a service counter, and looking at the details of an object.

Its text search and contrast effects are built on the same camera view, so the zoom, search and brightness controls work on whatever is in front of the lens.

Zooming in on small print and distant signs

Point the camera at a label, menu or sign and zoom in as far as you need to read it. The listing describes this for close print and for text across a room or street, such as a restaurant menu behind a counter.

Object details can be examined the same way, by zooming into the part of the view you want to see.

Searching for words before or after a photo

Text search can be run either before you take a picture or after. Use it to find a particular word on a menu, a departure board or any surface with printed text, so you can go straight to the line you need.

Because search works on the camera view, it covers any text the camera can see, not only a single document.

Low-contrast text and dim rooms

Visual effects can be applied to make low-contrast text more visible, which helps when printed text is faint against its background. In low light, the view is brightened automatically, so you do not have to adjust it by hand as the lighting changes.

These two effects are meant to be used together with the zoom, so faint text in a dim place can be enlarged and brightened in one view.

Taking photos to zoom into later and opening it quickly

You can take a photo and then zoom into it as far as needed, which lets you examine the detail after the moment has passed. Photos keep the text you searched for, so the same zoom and search can be used on them.

Quick tap is an optional setting under System, then Gestures. Turn on Use Quick tap, choose the open app option and select Magnifier, and a double tap on the back of the phone will open it.
