Microsoft Family Safety

What Microsoft Family Safety is for

Microsoft Family Safety is a parental control app for families whose children use Android phones, Xbox consoles and Windows PCs. A parent sets up the controls, and the listing describes the app as meant for both parents and kids.

The app covers three jobs: filtering apps, games and websites, limiting screen time, and reviewing what a child has been doing online.

Filtering apps, games and websites

Parents can use parental controls to filter out inappropriate apps and games. The listing also lets a parent restrict browsing to kid-friendly websites, with Microsoft Edge named as the browser for that setting.

Setting screen time limits on each device

On Android, Xbox and Windows, a parent can set time limits for specific apps and games. The listing also describes device management on Xbox and Windows, which sets screen time limits across those devices together.

Reviewing activity and the weekly email

The activity log records screen time and online usage, so a parent can see how a family's digital habits look over time. Each week, a summary of the child's activity is emailed to the parent. The listing presents this as a way to open a conversation about what kids are doing online.

What children see under the controls

According to the listing, a child's use of a device follows the parental controls a parent has set, and the child gets access to age-appropriate content. Google Play rates the app 3+.
