What Microsoft Translator is for
Microsoft Translator is a translation app from Microsoft Corporation. It takes three kinds of input: typed text, spoken speech and text inside an image. The listing describes it as free and says it covers more than 100 languages.
The developer pitches it at people travelling, dealing with everyday tasks in a second language, or working across languages. It fits anyone who needs to understand or be understood in a language they do not speak.
Translating typed text
You type or paste text and the app translates it into another language. The listing says text translation works across more than 100 languages. The developer links to a separate page that lists the supported languages, so that page is the place to check whether a specific language is included.
Because the same tool handles every language on that list, you can use one app for a message in one language and a reply in another.
Speaking with someone in another language
The app offers real-time speech translation, which turns spoken words into translated output as the conversation happens. The listing presents this as the main way to talk with someone who speaks a different language.
The listing also says the multi-device conversation feature has been retired. It is not part of the app as currently described.
Translating text in images
The app can translate text that appears inside an image. You point it at a picture that contains words in another language and it returns a translation of that text.
This works alongside the text and speech options, so a single app covers all three ways of getting words across a language gap.
