What MSN Weather covers and who it suits
MSN Weather is a forecast app from Microsoft that shows current conditions, forecasts and weather maps for any location you search. The developer pitches it at people planning a day: commuters, beachgoers, skiers and anyone who needs to know what the sky will do later.
Its core is a set of forecast views, from the hourly outlook through a 5-day and a 10-day forecast, plus a day drill-down for more detail on a single date. Historical weather averages sit alongside them, so a forecast can be read against what is normal for that time of year.
Reading the detailed conditions
Each day's detail page lists wind, visibility, humidity, barometric pressure, dew point and the chance of precipitation. It also shows sunrise and sunset times, the moon phase and the UV index, which covers the sun-related figures that people check before going outside for long periods.
These readings are the same whether you open the app for a quick look or drill into one day. They suit anyone who wants more than a temperature and an icon before deciding on clothing, outdoor plans or time in the sun.
Radar, satellite and precipitation maps
The interactive maps layer temperature, radar observation, radar forecast, precipitation, cloud cover and satellite imagery over a map of the area. The developer describes these as the way to go deeper than the forecast text.
Radar observation and radar forecast are the two maps most people use to see where rain or snow is now and where it is heading. Cloud and satellite views show larger systems, which helps when a storm is building outside the immediate area.
Saved cities, alerts and sync across devices
You can add several cities to a favorites list for quick access and see current weather for each one without searching again. Signing in saves those preferences to your account.
The app sends notifications for severe weather so you have time to prepare. Favorite cities also sync between MSN Weather on the web and the mobile app, so the list you set up on one device appears on the other.
