What Notesnook is and who it suits
Notesnook is a note app built around encryption. Each note is encrypted on the device it was written on before anything is sent to the cloud, and the developer says it cannot read the notes either. The listing also says there are no ads, trackers or telemetry tied to your notes.
It suits people who keep private or sensitive notes and want them available on a phone, tablet, laptop and browser at the same time. The listing's summary also names a journal alongside notes and notebooks.
How the encryption works and what it covers
The listing names XChaCha20-Poly1305 and Argon2 as the algorithms in use. Encryption covers data on the device, data in transit and data stored on the server. Encryption is always on, and the listing says it cannot be switched off.
The protection also extends to the metadata around your notes. Notebook and tag names are encrypted, not only the text inside each note. Privacy mode blocks screenshots and app previews, so the contents of a note are less likely to appear in a screenshot or in the recent apps view.
Writing and syncing notes across devices
The listing says there is no cap on the number of notes or the number of devices you can sync. Notes sync between a phone, tablet, laptop and browser, so you can continue a note on another device where you left it.
Notes are sorted into notebooks and labeled with tags. On the free plan, the limit is 50 notebooks and 50 tags. The listing gives no other restriction on how notes are organized.
Open source code and running your own sync server
The apps and the sync server are both released under AGPLv3. That means the source code is public and can be read in full. Anyone can also run their own sync server rather than relying on the developer's.
The listing states that Privacy Guides recommends Notesnook.
