What Onkyo Controller is for and who it suits
Onkyo Controller is a remote control app for Onkyo network products. If you already own a network AV receiver, home theatre amplifier or wireless speaker from Onkyo, this is the app that lets you run it from an Android phone rather than from the handset that came in the box. The listing covers network receivers, home theatre products and wireless speakers released in April 2016 or later.
The app does three broad jobs: playing music in rooms, handling everyday controls for the unit, and reaching the equipment wired to it, such as a Blu-ray player or TV. It also carries the Dirac Live room correction tools for models that support them. Each of these is covered below.
Playing music in one room or several
The app can send music to a single room or to every room at once, depending on the products you have. Music can come from streaming services the listing names: Pandora, Spotify, DEEZER and TIDAL. It can also come from the music library stored on your phone or other smart device, or from a NAS drive that the compatible product can reach.
Sources that do not need a streaming account are radio, Bluetooth and USB. A Bluetooth or USB source plays through the unit, so the phone acts as a selector rather than as the speaker. The listing does not say which streaming services need their own account on top of this app.
Everyday remote control of the receiver
For day-to-day use, the app offers the common controls you would otherwise use on the handset. These are play and stop, volume, and choosing the input source. The phone screen stands in for the remote while you are sitting elsewhere in the house.
Powering the unit on from the app depends on a setting in the unit itself. The listing says the "Network Standby" item in the unit's initial settings must be switched to ON. Without it, the app can still control a unit that is already switched on, but it cannot turn the unit on from standby. The listing also says every model needs a firmware update before it works with Onkyo Controller.
Controlling a Blu-ray player or TV through the amplifier
Where an AV amplifier or home theatre product sits between the TV and the rest of the equipment, the app can operate the devices connected to it over HDMI. The listing names a Blu-ray Disc player and a TV as examples. The amplifier passes the commands on, so you control the source from the phone without switching the input by hand.
This only covers devices that are connected through the amplifier. Equipment wired directly to the TV is outside it.
Dirac Live sound field correction and filters
On Dirac Live enabled products, the app runs a sound field measurement and applies an automatic correction based on the result. The listing also says the correction filters can be edited. This is the part of the app for anyone who wants to adjust the room correction rather than accept the default.
The listing notes one carry-over rule for people updating from version 2.x. Customised settings are not kept, but Dirac measurement results are. So the room measurement you already made should still be there after the update, while other preferences will need setting again.
Checking formats and setting up nearby wireless devices
The app can show the audio and video formats of the input and output signals. This is a readout, useful when you want to confirm what the amplifier is receiving from a source, or what it is sending on to the TV.
The app also helps set up wireless devices near you. The listing says the access point details, such as the SSID, are needed for this, and that the device location is used for nothing else. Setup of a new wireless speaker or receiver therefore runs through the network name, not through any other device data.
