What Onkyo Remote controls and who it suits

Onkyo Remote is an Android remote for Onkyo audio and video receivers that sit on a home network. The developer lists it as compatible with network-capable Onkyo A/V products and selected network-ready models. It is aimed at people who already own one of those receivers and would rather run it from a phone or tablet than from the television or the physical remote.

Its main jobs are choosing radio and streaming stations, browsing music on a DLNA server, sending music from the phone itself, and handling basic playback and volume.

Choosing radio and streaming stations on screen

Audio streaming services are selected from the app's touchscreen, so a station can be picked without opening the TV's on-screen menu. On a receiver with a built-in radio tuner, the app also shows the station frequency while you listen.

The frequency display works only on A/V products that have that tuner. General remote and playback controls sit alongside the station picker, and a separate volume control handles level changes.

Playing music from a DLNA server or your phone

Music on a DLNA-compatible server can be browsed from the phone, and tracks are selected directly from the server. The app can also stream music stored on the Android device to the receiver over the network, on selected models only.

Both sources use the same remote-style controls, so the phone works as the selector for whichever library you are playing from.

Lossless formats and Spotify Connect support

Through the Home Media function, the app plays FLAC, DSD and Apple Lossless files on selected models. Which formats play depends on the receiver as well as the app.

Spotify Connect is supported on A/V networks that have Spotify compatibility.
