PlantNet Plant Identification is a plant identifier built and run by public research institutes. Its main use is naming a plant you have photographed outdoors or in a garden. It also asks you to contribute: if you choose to share an observation, it becomes open scientific data.

The app suits people who walk, forage, garden or farm and want a name for what they see, and people who are willing to add their sightings to research records.

Identifying a plant from a photo

Point the camera at a leaf, flower, fruit or piece of bark. The app ranks the most likely species from a catalogue of more than 85,000, covering wildflowers, trees, grasses, ferns, cacti, and garden and crop plants.

Each suggestion opens a species page, so you can compare the match against the description before accepting it.

Species pages: range, seasons and uses

A species page shows where the plant is found on a distribution map and when it flowers and fruits. It also shows how often the species is recorded and what it is used for.

Links to scientific references sit on the same page for anyone who wants to read further.

Sharing observations to research datasets

A shared observation carries a photo, a date and a location. Researchers combine large numbers of these to track vegetation shifts with climate, spot invasive species early and document plants that are becoming rare.

Observations also feed GBIF, the global biodiversity data network, so a single walk can end up in a published dataset.

Add the Pl@ntNet widget to your Home Screen and start a new observation without opening the app first. The species explorer now has trait filters, so you can narrow a group down to the plants matching what you see, with the number of species behind each value. This version is also faster and more stable, with many crashes and rotation issues fixed.
