What PureVPN is and who it suits
PureVPN is a VPN app for Android. It routes your internet traffic through one of its servers so the sites you visit see that server's IP address instead of your own. The developer lists more than 6000 servers in over 65 countries, and it says you can connect to a USA server directly or pick another country.
The app is aimed at people who want to hide their IP address, reach geo-restricted content, or keep their browsing private on a phone or tablet. To use it you download the app, register for an account and then connect. Registration is also required for the 7-day free trial.
Connecting and choosing a server location
Connection is handled from the main screen. The developer describes one-tap connection to a chosen location, and a recommendation feature that suggests a server location. You can switch to a different country at any time.
Recently used locations are kept so you can reconnect quickly, and you can mark any of them as favorites. The app also reconnects automatically if the VPN drops, and it can choose a protocol automatically. The listing names IKEv2, OpenVPN over TCP and UDP, and WireGuard as the protocols available.
Encryption, protocols and split tunneling
Traffic is encrypted with AES using 256-bit keys by default once you connect. The developer says this applies on phones, computers and tablets alike. The developer also says PureVPN's no-log policy was reviewed through KPMG's Always-on audit programme, and that Altius IT audits the service externally.
Split tunneling lets you choose which traffic goes through the VPN and which stays on your local network. A device can therefore use the VPN for some apps while other traffic goes directly. The app supports one account on up to 10 devices at once.
Dark web monitoring and the password manager
Dark web monitoring scans for leaks of your personal information and sends an alert if it finds your details on the dark web. It runs continuously, according to the developer.
The in-app password manager generates strong passwords and stores logins, syncing them across your devices. The listing also names an eSIM feature and Remove My Data among the app's features.
Browser extension and support channels
The listing describes a separate encrypted browser extension that works as an unlimited proxy. It is described as a way to bypass geo-restrictions, hide your IP and browse anonymously from inside the browser.
Support is offered 24/7 through live chat, email and a support center. The developer lists enquiries and complaints as going to its email address.
