Google Sheets is Google's spreadsheet editor for Android phones and tablets. It is the same Sheets people use in a browser, and its pitch is that you can start a sheet, change one, or pick up somebody else's without going near a computer. With more than a billion installs, it is one of the most widely used productivity apps on the platform.
The app has no listed price. The basics are all included: entering and sorting data, cell formatting, formulas, charts, and find and replace. There are also suggestions that propose a chart or some formatting from what is already in the sheet. That covers the work most people actually do on a phone, which is checking numbers, fixing a cell, or adding a row.
Sheets is designed around more than one person using the same file. You can share a sheet, have several people edit it at once, and leave or answer comments on specific parts of it. For a household budget, a club roster or a team tracker, the app is mostly a way to stay inside a sheet everyone already works from.
Work saves as you type, and the developer says you can keep editing offline. Together those features make it hard to lose changes. They also mean your spreadsheets live in Google's cloud as shared documents, not as files you manage yourself. If you want to keep files local and private, that is the wrong model for you.
Excel support helps. The app opens, edits and saves Excel files, so a spreadsheet emailed to you from a Microsoft shop does not have to be converted before you can work on it.
Some features are reserved for Google Workspace subscribers. These include notifications for edits made while you were away, chatting with colleagues inside a sheet, AI-driven insights, pulling in data from other business tools, building custom solutions, and the security controls companies ask for. For a solo user, the paywall leaves out little you would miss. For a team, edit alerts and in-sheet chat are the kind of thing you end up wanting, and they come with a subscription.
The app also handles only one job. Written documents live in Google Docs and file browsing in Google Drive, so the full Google setup means several apps instead of one office suite.
If you already share spreadsheets with Google users, or receive Excel files you sometimes need to fix on the move, this is an easy install. The free offer covers real editing, not just viewing. Skip it if you want offline-first files that never touch a cloud account, or if the AI and team features are the reason you are looking, because those cost a Workspace subscription.
