What the file manager is for
Solid Explorer is a file manager for Android that covers files on the phone, in cloud accounts and on network servers from one interface. It suits people who keep files in several places and want to move them between those places without a separate app for each. Chromebook and tablet users can also work with a mouse, keyboard or trackpad.
The main screen can split into two panels, each showing its own folder. Files move from one panel to the other by drag and drop, which makes it practical for sorting downloads into folders or copying media onto an SD card.
Finding, sorting and renaming files
Indexed search returns matches from an index of the device's files, with filters to narrow the results. Collections group files by type into Downloads, Recent, Photos, Videos, Music, Documents and Apps, so a person can open one of these without knowing which folder a file landed in.
Batch rename applies a naming pattern to many files at once. This is useful for numbering a set of photos or tidying a folder of exported recordings.
Connecting cloud accounts and network servers
Cloud support covers Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Box, MediaFire, Yandex, Owncloud, NextCloud and SugarSync. Mega is also listed, but the listing says it needs a paid add-on. Network access covers SMB/CIFS (Samba) shares, SFTP, FTP and WebDAV, which is how a NAS or home server is reached.
Transfers can run between any two of these locations: cloud to cloud, server to phone, or SD card to NAS. The listing also says the FTP Server feature lets a computer reach the phone's files directly. A USB OTG drive is named as a storage source for the storage analyzer.
Locking files and sharing them over a network
Files can be encrypted with AES-256 and opened only with a password or a fingerprint. The listing states that encrypted files remain protected after the app is uninstalled, and that no account is needed to use this.
The built-in web server lets a phone, tablet or computer on the same network download files through its browser. The receiving device does not need the app installed.
Freeing space, archives and built-in viewers
The storage analyzer reports what takes up space, lists duplicate and large files, and flags junk for removal. It covers internal storage, SD cards, USB OTG drives and cloud accounts such as Google Drive, OneDrive and Dropbox.
Archives can be created and extracted in ZIP, 7ZIP, RAR and TAR formats. Image, music and video players and a text editor are built in, and themes and icon sets can change how the app looks. On rooted devices, a root explorer mode is listed for browsing system files.
