What Monitor & Control is for

Monitor & Control is a monitoring and remote control app from Sony Corporation, aimed at video creators. It works with a list of Sony cameras that runs from the BURANO and PXW-Z200 through the FX series and α models to the ZV-E1, and the developer points users to a support page for the connection steps.

Its main job is to move the camera's picture onto a bigger screen, and to let the operator change settings from wherever they are standing. The developer lists smartphones, tablets and Macs as the devices it can run on.

Checking exposure on a larger screen

The app shows the waveform monitor, false colour, histogram and zebra displays on the phone, tablet or Mac screen. These are the standard tools for judging exposure, and on a larger display they are easier to read at the production site than on a small camera screen.

A vectorscope is included for checking hue and saturation of colour. The developer presents these displays as the basis for setting exposure at the shoot.

Changing camera settings from another device

Frame rate, sensitivity, shutter speed, ND filter, look and white balance can be adjusted from the mobile device or Mac. The connection can be wired or wireless, so the operator does not need to be at the camera to make these changes.

The ND filter item only appears on cameras that have an ND filter. Shutter speed can be shown as a value or as an angle, and markers can be displayed on the picture to help framing and shooting.

Focus, colour and LUT preview

Focus can be set by touching the picture, and AF sensitivity can be adjusted in the settings. A control bar along the side of the screen is intended to make focus adjustments quicker to reach.

Picture Profile and Scene File settings can be changed from the app, and LUTs can be switched. The developer says a LUT can be applied while recording in Log mode, so the operator sees the picture as it will look in the final grade. For anamorphic lenses, a de-squeeze display is available.
