What Synthesia is for and who it suits
Synthesia is a piano learning app for people who want to play without first learning to read notation. Songs scroll down the screen as falling note blocks, and the matching keys show which notes come next.
The listing presents it as a way to start playing straight away, including for people who cannot read sheet music. Each song can also be shown as traditional sheet music, so a learner can move toward notation at their own pace.
Practicing with falling notes or sheet music
You can pick falling note blocks, traditional sheet music, or both at once. The choice is made per practice session, so the same song can be read one way and then played another.
Every song comes with hints about which finger to use on each note. The fingering guidance is meant to help with technique as well as with finding the right keys.
Practicing one hand at a time with Melody Practice
Both hands can be practiced separately or together, so a learner can work on the left hand alone before adding the right. This is useful for songs with two distinct parts.
In Melody Practice mode, the song pauses until the correct note is played. The listing says this lets a learner go at their own speed rather than keeping up with a fixed tempo.
Using a digital piano or touchscreen
Synthesia can be played on the phone or tablet touchscreen, or with a digital keyboard connected to the device. With a connected keyboard, the learner plays on real keys instead of the glass.
The developer says the app works with the lights on most lighted keyboards, so the keys that need pressing can light up during play.
Loops, bookmarks, metronome and recording
Practice tools include loops for repeating a section, bookmarks for marking places in a song, and a built-in metronome for keeping time. These are listed as available alongside the core features.
The full set of 150 included songs, along with any other MIDI song, and a simple multi-track recorder for making your own songs, are unlocked by a one-time purchase. The listing says that purchase also covers all future upgrades. It is not a monthly subscription.
