What Sketches is for

Sketches is a painting and sketching app for Android, filed under Art & Design. It is built around brushes that imitate traditional media, so it suits people who draw or paint on a phone or tablet, often with a stylus.

According to the listing, each stroke changes with the pressure, angle and width of the movement made with the pen. The developer presents this as making a line behave like a brush on paper.

Brushes and painting media

The brush set includes a pen, a Rotring-style pen, a felt pen, a pen brush, an oil pastel, an acrylic brush and an airbrush for spraying. Watercolor comes as two separate brushes, one dry and one wet.

The listing also describes a brush editor, which it presents as a feature of the app. It gives no detail on what the editor changes.

Filling, text, shapes and editing tools

Beyond the brushes, the tool list includes an area and filling tool, patterns, a text tool, an eraser, a cutter and a smudge tool for blending. A colour eyedropper is listed among the features, for picking a colour from the drawing.

A shapes tool is included, but the listing marks it as iPad only.

Layers, photo import, export and Pro

Layers let a drawing be built up in separate parts. Photos can be imported into the canvas, and the listing mentions advanced sharing and export options without naming file formats.

The listing says many tool variants, layers and dozens of extra features come with the Pro options. Premium features require a subscription, either weekly or yearly, billed through the Google Play account. A free trial is offered on some subscriptions only.
