What this sandbox god game is for
WorldBox is a god game where you start with an empty world and decide what happens in it. You place creatures and powers onto the map and then watch the results play out over time. It is aimed at players who enjoy open-ended simulation more than fixed goals, and the listing reports more than 50 million installs.
The creatures include sheep, wolves, orcs, elves, dwarves and other magic beings. Each one follows the rules of the simulation, so the same map can develop very differently from one session to the next.
Spawning creatures and growing civilizations
Once creatures are placed, they can build houses and roads and form civilizations. The listing says those civilizations can go to war with each other, so rival settlements may clash on the same map.
Creatures also evolve over the course of a run, and the developer says you can watch the rise of civilizations as it happens. You help them survive and develop, or you leave them alone and see what they do.
Disasters and destructive powers
The powers include acid rain that dissolves ground, an atomic bomb, tornadoes, underground worms and a heat ray. Meteorites, volcanoes, lava and geysers are listed as disasters you can trigger.
These tools are meant for creative destruction as much as for building. You can wipe out a region with one power, then start again with another.
Conway's Game of Life and Langton's ant
WorldBox includes two classic cellular automata: Conway's Game of Life and Langton's ant. The developer says Conway's rules can quickly wipe out a world's civilization, which makes them a way to test how fragile a settlement is.
Langton's ant is a simple set of rules that produces complex patterns over time. Both are presented as experiments you run inside the same sandbox as the creatures and disasters.
Building pixel art worlds
A separate mode lets you build pixel art worlds using free tools, magic and brushes. You choose different pixel types to color the map.
This part of the game is about construction rather than simulation. You can use it to design a map first and then populate it with creatures and powers.
