Action Blocks

What Action Blocks is for

Action Blocks puts customisable buttons on the Android home screen, each one tied to a routine task. The buttons run on Google Assistant, so a block can do whatever Assistant can do.

The listing names three groups of users: people with age-related conditions, people with cognitive or learning differences, and adults who want a simpler way to reach everyday functions on their phone. It also points to people with speech and language disorders.

Running Assistant actions from a button

Each block can be set to trigger a single Assistant action. The listing's examples are calling a friend, starting a favourite show and controlling lights in the home.

Because the actions come from Assistant, a block can only do what Assistant can already do. Setting a block up is a matter of choosing that action and placing the button on the home screen.

Speaking set phrases in urgent situations

A block can also be configured to speak a phrase aloud when tapped. The developer says this is useful for people with speech and language disorders who need to communicate quickly in an urgent situation.

The phrase is fixed in the block, so the same words are spoken each time the button is pressed.

Picture symbols for AAC and special education

The app includes tens of thousands of picture communication symbols from PCS by Tobii Dynavox. These can be used on blocks as a visual cue alongside or instead of text.

The listing says the symbols are meant for users of augmentative and alternative communication devices and for special education software.

Setting up blocks for other people

Blocks can be created for a family member, a friend or the person using the phone. The listing describes this as a way to set up a simple home screen for someone else.
