What the app does with a compatible Canon camera
Canon Camera Connect links a phone or tablet to a compatible Canon camera over Wi-Fi, either directly or through a wireless router. Once linked, the phone can receive images from the camera and, for some models, act as a remote control for it.
It suits people who shoot with compatible Canon models and want to move or control shots from a phone or tablet. The developer says compatibility depends on the model and feature, and lists those on a separate Canon web page.
Moving photos and video from camera to phone
Transfers save camera images to the phone in JPEG, MP4 and MOV formats. RAW files do not come across as RAW: the listing says they are resized to JPEG during import.
Some camera files cannot be saved through the app. These include MOV and 8K movies shot on EOS cameras, HEIF 10-bit and RAW movie files, and AVCHD files from Canon camcorders.
Shooting remotely with live view
Live view streams the camera's view to the phone, so the phone can frame and take shots from a distance. A Bluetooth connection also lets the phone release the camera shutter without a Wi-Fi session.
When a Power Zoom Adapter is fitted, the listing says Live View must be switched on in the camera for the adapter to work.
Pairing with the camera by Bluetooth or NFC
A Bluetooth-enabled camera can be paired first, then switched to a Wi-Fi connection from the app. An NFC-enabled camera can be switched to Wi-Fi by touching it with the phone.
The app can add the phone's location data to images on the camera. The listing warns that images may keep GPS data, which others can see if the photos are posted online.
Firmware updates, Canon services and languages
The app can transfer the latest firmware to a compatible camera. It also connects to what the listing calls Canon's various services, without naming them.
The listing names ten interface languages, including Japanese, English, French, German, Korean and Simplified Chinese.
