What Chomp SMS is for

Chomp SMS is a replacement for the messaging app that comes with Android, handling both SMS and MMS. The developer positions it for people who want the texting app to work the way they prefer, with many settings for how messages look, sound and behave.

Its main extras are scheduling, a passcode lock, blocking, dual SIM support and a choice of emoji sets. Most of the other features sit around those.

Scheduling, sending and replying to texts

Scheduled SMS lets you write a message now and have it sent at a set time, which the developer suggests for reminders and birthday wishes. You can also cancel a message while it is still sending.

Text snippets store reusable replies, and signatures add a fixed line to the end of your messages. A multi-select picture gallery lets you pick several photos to send at once. The app also handles dual SIM phones and lists improved MMS and group messaging.

Organizing conversations and blocking senders

You can pin favourite conversations to the top of the list so they stay easy to reach. Long-pressing a conversation and choosing Mark as Unread keeps it unread until you open it, which helps when you want a reminder to reply later.

A blocklist filters out unwanted senders, and the app includes a backup feature for your messages.

Locking messages and replying from the lock screen

A passcode lock guards the app, and the developer lists privacy options alongside it. The quick reply popup appears when a message arrives and can be used on the lock screen, so you can answer without unlocking the phone.

These two features are designed to be used together: the lock controls who can open the conversations, and the popup lets you reply without opening them.

Changing how messages look and sound

Notifications can be customized with LED colours, ringtones and vibrate patterns. The screen colour, font style, text size and background wallpaper can each be changed in the conversation view.

For emoji, you choose a style from Android, Twitter, JoyPixels or iOS, and the listing says skin tone variants are included.
