FREE calling and texting (SMS texts + MMS) in US & Canada with FREE phone number
By Mei-Lin Chua
Contributing editor, apps and storefronts
FreeTone is a calling and texting app for Android from TextMe, Inc. It gives you a phone number of your own that you use from the app, so you can make and receive calls and texts without using your carrier line for them.
The developer's focus is on people who call or text family and friends in the US and Canada. Calls to those two countries are described as free, with no credits to manage, which is the main thing that separates it from the free calling apps the listing compares it with.
The build we hold is FreeTone Calls & Texting 3.55.0 (APKS split bundle) for Android 10 and up.

You can call any US or Canada number, landline or mobile, and the listing says there is no limit on minutes. Calls can be made as HD voice or as video chat. The developer also claims call quality and speed are better than other VoIP apps, though that is the developer's own comparison.
Texting works with ordinary SMS and with MMS for pictures. The listing says free texting reaches 40 countries, which is wider than the calling coverage, so a text can go further than a call.
The app assigns you a private number that works on your Android phone, with voicemail attached. Calls to that number reach the app, and missed ones can be left as messages.
You sign up with an email address, a Facebook login or a Google account. Your account can then be opened on other devices, so the same number and conversations are available wherever you sign in.
Group messaging lets you text several contacts in one conversation. The listing lists it alongside free HD calls and video chat as part of the same messaging setup.
Because texts are real SMS and MMS, group messages reach people who do not have the app, as long as they have a phone number in a supported country.
