What Google Classroom is for
Google Classroom is a class app from Google LLC that connects teachers and learners, inside and outside schools. According to the developer, it is meant to replace paper with a set of tools for creating classes, handing out assignments, communicating and keeping work organised.
The app serves two groups. Instructors use it to run classes and mark work. Learners use it to find their assignments and take part in class discussion, so one app covers both ends of a task.
Setting up a class and adding students
A teacher can add students to a class directly, or share a class code for students to join themselves. The developer says setup takes just minutes.
The app also lets users choose which account to use inside Classroom, so one device can switch between accounts.
Creating, reviewing and marking assignments
Teachers create, review and mark assignments in one place. The developer calls this a paperless workflow, and says it is meant to save time.
Students get an assignments page that shows all of their work. Class materials such as documents, photos and videos are filed automatically into folders in Google Drive.
Announcements and discussion on the class stream
Teachers can send announcements and start class discussions on the stream, which the listing describes as the class's shared feed. Posts go out instantly, according to the developer.
Students can share resources with each other, and reply to questions on the stream. Answers sit in the same place as the teacher's posts.
Attaching photos, videos and local files
Users can attach photos, videos and local files from their device to Classroom posts. They can also take a photo or video with the camera and post it to the class.
The listing also names offline support as a feature of the app.
Ads and student data under Workspace for Education
The developer says Classroom contains no ads, and never uses content or student data for advertising purposes. It is run on the same terms as the rest of Google Workspace for Education services.
Class materials that Classroom files are stored in Google Drive folders, as described in the section on assignments.
