What Google Pay India is for
Google Pay (India) is a UPI payment app for people with an Indian bank account and a +91 mobile number. Most of what it does is built on UPI, the bank-to-bank payment system, so money moves from one bank account to another rather than through a separate wallet balance. The listing says it works with any Indian bank that supports BHIM UPI.
The app covers four broad jobs: paying shops and people, paying recharges and bills, using a credit card, and checking credit or taking a loan. A parent can also give a family member limited access to their account. Each job is described below.
Paying shops, friends and bank accounts
To pay a shop, you scan the UPI QR code the merchant displays. To pay a person, you send money to a contact or to any phone number, and the listing says this works at any time of day. You can also transfer money straight from your bank account to another account.
The app shows your real-time balance for any bank account you have linked, so you can see several banks in one place. For shops with card terminals, the Tap to Pay option lets you hold your phone against a point-of-sale terminal to pay without a card. The listing notes that this works only on select cards.
Mobile recharges, utility bills and loan EMIs
You can buy prepaid mobile plans for Jio, Airtel, Vi and BSNL from inside the app. For utility bills, the listing names electricity, broadband, DTH and FASTag. Once you link a bill, the app sends alerts before each due date, so you do not have to remember each one.
The same bill payments route cover credit card statements and loan EMIs. You clear these with a tap on the amount due, rather than setting up each payee again.
Using a credit card with UPI
A RuPay credit card can be linked to the app and used through Credit on UPI, the listing's name for paying with credit over UPI. You can also link a RuPay, Visa or Mastercard card and use it at stores, online merchants and for bill payments and recharges. The listing says Visa and Mastercard cards work at select online merchants, but not everywhere.
The app also lets you apply for Flex by Google Pay, a co-branded RuPay credit card, without leaving the app. The listing says it earns rewards on each spend, lets you redeem them in the app, and lets you repay in EMIs. Whether a card application is approved is decided by the card issuer, not by the app.
Pocket money for children and dependants
Pocket Money gives family members, friends or dependants digital payment access that is linked to your bank account. You set a monthly spending limit for each person, so they can pay for everyday items on their own. The listing says this removes the need to send a QR code for approval each time.
The access is built on NPCI's UPI Circle. You can track their payments in real time, receive alerts, and pause their access at any moment.
Security checks and loans
Each payment needs your UPI PIN or your biometric authentication. You can also lock the app itself with fingerprint or face recognition. The listing says the app's fraud checks run alongside the protections of your bank and the payment network.
The app offers a free credit score check through CIBIL, with no charge for the check. It also lists personal loans of up to ₹40 lakh from named lenders, including Aditya Birla Capital, L&T Finance, DMI Finance, Axis Bank, IDFC FIRST Bank and SMFG India Credit. The listing describes the loans as fully digital, with an interest rate starting at 9.99 per cent, and says top-ups are available with a choice of amount and tenure.
