What HP Sure Admin controls on HP Commercial PCs
HP Sure Admin is a firmware access tool for HP Commercial PCs. It decides who can change firmware settings, and it covers both remote administration and sign-in at the machine itself. The people it is built for are IT administrators who look after a fleet of HP business computers.
The developer describes it as a feature of those PCs, not a standalone program. The phone app described below is a companion that only matters for local sign-in.
Remote firmware management with key pairs
Access to firmware is handled with public and private key pairs rather than a password. The developer presents this as stronger than a typical password-based setup.
When an administrator manages firmware remotely, the developer says the process needs no extra steps on the PC. The local sign-in process below only comes into play when someone is physically at the machine.
Signing in to BIOS setup with a one-time PIN
Some tasks need someone at the PC, such as opening BIOS F10 Setup. In those cases the firmware shows a QR code on screen. The local IT person, or a user, scans it with the HP Sure Admin Mobile app.
The app then produces a one-time PIN. That PIN is typed into the firmware to complete authentication. Because each PIN is generated for a single use, a sign-in cannot simply be reused from a written password.
Who handles the phone side of sign-in
The HP Sure Admin Mobile app is the only part of this setup that runs on a phone. Its job is limited to reading the QR code and returning the PIN.
Any local IT person or user who needs to get past the firmware gate at the machine uses that same scan-and-type routine.
