What Jvdroid is for
Jvdroid is a Java development environment for Android, aimed at learning and education. It bundles the tools needed to write, compile and run Java code on the phone itself.
Students and anyone learning Java who wants to practise without a computer or a network connection are the people it suits. The developer also lists a bundled Java runtime and a Java 11 standard, so the code it runs follows the OpenJDK 11 standard.
Offline Java compiler and terminal
The compiler runs without an internet connection, so programs can be built and run anywhere. Any jar library can be added, which lets a program use code written by other people. The developer says compiler speed is improved through Nailgun.
A full terminal emulator is included for running commands directly. A Java interpreter mode based on JShell, called REPL, lets you type a line of Java and see the result straight away, which suits trying out small expressions.
Maven projects and JVM languages
Maven projects and their libraries are supported, so a project with dependencies can be built on the device. Kotlin, Scala and Clojure programs can also be built through Maven.
For those three languages the editor offers no code prediction or analysis. Only Java gets the full editing support.
Editor tools for writing Java
The editor has syntax highlighting with themes, tabs for several files, auto indentation and a code formatter. A Javadoc viewer shows documentation for methods and classes. An extended keyboard bar puts the symbols Java needs within easy reach on a touch screen.
Code prediction and real-time code analysis are available in the Premium version only. The developer describes them as matching a desktop IDE.
Examples and sharing code on Pastebin
Sample programs come built in, so there is code to open and study before writing anything new. They are offered for educational use.
Code can be shared to Pastebin with a single click, which gives a link others can open. This is useful when asking for help or showing a program to someone else.
