Who the aurora forecast app is for
My Aurora Forecast & Alerts is a Northern Lights forecasting app for Android. It is aimed at two groups: people planning a trip north who want to know whether the aurora is likely, and people who already follow geomagnetic activity closely.
The app covers both ends of that range, from a plain likelihood of seeing the aurora to solar wind figures and sun imagery.
Checking aurora odds and viewing spots
The current KP index is shown with the likelihood of seeing the Northern Lights. A list of the best places to view the aurora from right now sits alongside it, so you can see where conditions are currently favorable.
Forecasts run across the next hour, several hours and several weeks. The developer notes that weather can change any of them, which matters most for the longer-range forecasts used for trip planning.
Aurora strength map and alerts
A world map shows aurora strength using the SWPC Ovation aurora forecast, a model published by the US Space Weather Prediction Center. Push notifications alert you when auroral activity is expected to be high.
The developer lists the notifications and alerts as free, and says all functionality is free with no in-app purchases. This version of the app is supported by ads.
Solar wind data, sun images and webcams
Solar wind statistics and high-resolution sun imagery are included for anyone who wants the solar conditions behind an aurora event.
Live aurora webcams from around the world show what the sky looks like at other locations, which helps when choosing where to go.
Tours for Iceland, Alaska and Canada
The app includes tour information for aurora destinations such as Iceland, Alaska and Canada. The developer says these are tours it can recommend.
Paired with the multi-week forecast, this covers both the timing of a trip and the booking of a tour.
