What Nextplus is and who it suits
Nextplus is an Android app that gives you a phone number and a way to call and text from it, without a mobile plan. It runs on your phone or tablet and does not need a cellular connection, so the same number works on any Android device you sign in on.
The developer positions it as a free second line, or a primary one for people who do not want a carrier contract. Nothing has to be bought up front, and the listing describes no contract or commitment.
Getting a number and calling or texting any phone
You receive a free phone number inside the app. Texts are unlimited and free, and the listing says this covers messages to anyone, not only other Nextplus users. Calls are also unlimited and free in both directions, to any phone number, and the listing advertises calling from anywhere in the world.
The app is not a replacement for emergency services. The listing states that emergency calls are not supported.
How ads pay for calls and texts, and the ad-free plans
Delivering a call or text to a phone outside the app costs the developer money, and the listing says that cost is covered by ads. You see a few banner ads or watch a short video. Ads are served through Facebook, and the listing notes that if the person you contact also uses Nextplus, video ads are removed.
Ads can be removed with a subscription. The listing names five plans: banner ad removal for one month or one year, ad-free calls to Mexico landlines or mobiles for one month, and ad-free calls to the US and Canada for one year. Prices vary by country and are shown in the app before you pay. Subscriptions renew according to the plan you pick.
Messaging extras, group sends and syncing devices
Messages arrive instantly through push notifications. Chats support emojis, stickers, animated GIFs and voice notes. You can set your avatar to any photo or animated GIF, and the listing shows contacts' online status.
Group blast messaging sends one message to several recipients at once. Conversations stay in sync across multiple devices, so a thread started on one device shows up on the others.
