X gives you a free real-time feed, live audio, long video and DMs, but Premium sells visibility and reply priority, and the listing promises news without saying who checks it.
3.4 / 5
X is the Android app for the social network formerly called Twitter, made by X Corp. Play lists it under News & Magazines, and the developer pitches it as the place to catch stories as they break. What it really is: a public feed of short posts, photos and video from anyone with an account, plus private messages and live broadcasting on top.
That distinction matters for anyone choosing it as a news app. Nothing in the listing describes editors, sourcing or verification. The developer itself calls the feed raw and unfiltered. You are getting what people post, at the speed they post it, and the judging is left to you.
The free app covers a lot. You can follow trending topics and live events, and post text, photos and video. You can message people privately. You can join or start communities around a topic, with sports, gaming, tech and crypto among the developer's examples.
Two features go beyond a plain feed. Spaces lets you host live audio: discussions, interviews, a podcast recorded live. Separate live video streaming covers concerts or games. The listing also says videos on the platform can run up to 3 hours. Taken together, X can stand in for a basic broadcasting setup as well as a reading app.
Then there is Grok, the developer's AI assistant. According to the listing, it draws on X's real-time data to summarise trending news, explain videos and add context to posts. That could save you some scrolling. The listing does not say whether Grok has any usage limits on the free tier, and it does not say how the assistant handles posts that turn out to be wrong.
X Premium is the paid subscription, and the listing does not give a price. Some of what it includes is ordinary: fewer ads, longer videos, and the ability to edit posts. Locking editing behind a subscription is stingy for something this basic. And "fewer ads" tells you plainly that the free tier carries them.
The rest is a different kind of purchase. Premium buys a blue checkmark, boosted visibility and prioritised replies. In other words, subscribers pay to be seen and to sit higher in reply threads. For a reader, that means the order you see things in partly reflects who pays, not only what is relevant. Premium also opens creator revenue sharing and paid exclusive content, which is useful if you are building an audience.
Install X if the people you follow post there, if you want breaking events as they happen, or if you need free live audio and long video in one place. Its claimed 1,000,000,000+ installs suggest the audience is there. The app was updated on Play on 12 October 2026, so it is actively maintained.
Skip it if you want news that someone has checked before it reaches you. Apps built around publishers' headlines, such as Google News or Flipboard, are a closer fit for that, and X's listing makes no such promise. The 18+ content rating and the unfiltered pitch also make it a poor default for a family device. The free offer is broad. The paid layer, and the silence on moderation, hold the score down.
