What the Roku Smart Home app manages

Roku Smart Home is a control app for Roku's own smart home hardware. It covers indoor and outdoor security cameras, video doorbells, LED smart bulbs, smart light strips and smart plugs. It suits people who already have some of these devices and want them in one place.

Setup runs through a guided process inside the app. Every device appears in a single list, and you can group devices so that one command acts on several at once.

Viewing cameras and doorbells remotely

Cameras and video doorbells stream live footage to the app, and you can talk to whoever is in view through two-way audio. Motion and sound alerts notify you when something happens.

Motion detection zones let you mark the parts of a frame that should trigger an alert, so you are not notified about activity elsewhere in the picture. Camera settings can be adjusted in the app without going into a separate menu.

Cloud recordings and smart detection

A Roku Smart Home subscription unlocks cloud storage for motion-triggered recordings, which the listing says can be viewed for up to 14 days. The subscription also includes smart detection, which identifies people, pets, packages and cars.

Smart detection can filter alerts so that only the event types you choose reach your phone. To subscribe, you sign in with your Roku account.

Controlling bulbs and light strips on a schedule

The app lets you change the color of smart bulbs and light strips, adjust brightness and save color or brightness presets for reuse.

Rules can switch lights on a set schedule, and the listing notes this works even when no one is home.

Timed control of plugs and other devices

Smart plugs can be controlled remotely from the app. The listing gives indoor lamps and outdoor holiday lights as examples, along with any other compatible device plugged into one.

Each plug can have its own on and off schedule, set in the app.
