What First Words is for

First Words is a speech game for young children, aimed at helping them say words clearly and understand what they hear. The listing says the activities were built with speech-language pathologists, child psychologists and child development experts, and it describes the content as English-language.

The game is rated 3+ on Google Play, although its title says 1+. It is listed under Educational.

Learning sounds by copying videos

Short interactive videos are the core of the method. The developer's reasoning is that children learn to speak by imitating the people around them, so the videos ask a child to watch and then repeat.

The listing says this copying is meant to build articulation, the way individual sounds are formed, and comprehension at the same time.

Activities and updates

The listing gives the game as hundreds of activities. It also says new content arrives regularly, though it does not describe what each update adds.

The developer presents the activities as a way to practise pronunciation and communication skills, not as a single lesson that a child finishes.

Other apps in the Piknik subscription

First Words is listed as one part of Piknik, a set of preschool apps from Sago Mini, Toca Boca and Originator. Full access to that set requires an Unlimited Plan subscription.

The developer presents the subscription as the way to reach every app in the collection, so the plan is the route to the other titles rather than an extra feature of this game.
