Simple Speedcheck is a speed test from Ookla. It is built for checking how fast a phone's mobile connection or a home or office internet line is running at a given moment. Each run reports download speed, upload speed and ping.
The results are drawn with simple illustrations and coloured labels. The listing says icons next to the numbers explain what a given speed is suitable for, such as streaming or video calls, so the figures can be read without knowing networking terms.
On cellular connections, the app runs tests on 3G, 4G and LTE networks. The listing presents this as a way to judge coverage, since the same spot can give very different results at different times or places.
Saved cellular tests can be compared against one another. That makes it possible to see whether a particular location or network consistently performs better than another.
For Wi-Fi hotspots and wired broadband, the listing names DSL, ADSL and cable connections. The same ping, download and upload measurements apply to each.
Repeated tests on a broadband line are stored, so a user can look back over weeks of results and judge how steady the connection has been over time.
Every test goes into a personal history. Each entry records download and upload speed, ping, signal strength, the network name, both the internal and external IP address, and the date of the test.
Tests run against a worldwide network of high speed data servers. The listing says this is what the results rely on for accuracy, though it does not name the server locations.
