What Square Home replaces on your home screen

Square Home is an Android launcher, which means it replaces the home screen and app drawer that come with your phone. Instead of a standard grid of icons, it places apps, shortcuts and contacts on a tile grid.

The developer lists phones, tablets, TV boxes and foldable devices as the intended hardware. It is aimed at people who want a tile-based home screen, or who use a larger or folding display and want the layout to adapt to it.

Arranging tiles and moving between pages

Tiles sit on a grid, and the layout is set out on pages. You scroll up and down within a page, and swipe sideways to move between pages.

The listing mentions extensive options for layout and styling, so you can change how the grid and the tiles look. It also says the grid works on tablets and other large screens, not only on phones.

Using Square Home on foldables and tablets

The developer says the launcher adapts to foldable displays and names the Galaxy Z Fold series as an example. The tile layout is meant to reflow when a foldable opens or closes.

Tablets and other large screens get the same tile interface. The listing describes this as full support, so the grid is not limited to a phone-sized layout.

Tile animations and the Liquid Glass effect

You can add animations and visual effects to the tiles. The newest option is called Liquid Glass.

Liquid Glass reacts to three things: tiles moving, the device's motion measured by its accelerometer, and your touch. It is a cosmetic setting, and the listing presents it as one of several effects, not as a required part of the launcher.

Notifications, contacts and system actions on tiles

Tiles can show notifications and unread counts, so you can see new messages without opening each app. Contacts can also be placed on tiles for direct access.

The listing names a set of system actions that a tile can trigger: expanding notifications, expanding quick settings, opening recent apps, locking the screen and opening the power dialog.

Finding apps in the drawer by usage

The smart app drawer sorts apps according to how you use them. Apps you open most often move towards the top, so favourites are easier to reach.

Because the ordering is based on usage patterns, the drawer changes over time as you use the phone. The listing does not describe a manual sort option for it.
