What it is and who it’s for
Total Commander is a file manager based on the well known desktop app. The Android version is built around working with files and folders: browsing, copying, renaming, deleting, and organizing.
It suits people who want more control than a basic file browser, especially if you like panel based navigation. It can also fit into workflows like moving folders around, editing text files, or handling archives.
Manage files with two-panel workflows
The app uses two panels side by side. You can browse two locations at the same time, then move or copy items between them.
For transfers, it supports copying or moving whole subfolders, and it includes drag and drop using a long press on the file icon plus a move gesture. There is also in place rename and the ability to create directories.
Edit, search, select, and view details
It includes a built-in text editor. The listing also says the search function works for text, not just file names, so you can find content inside files.
Selection tools go beyond single taps. You can select and unselect groups, tap icons to toggle individual files, and select a range using a long tap and release on an icon.
Archives, permissions, and sending/playing files
You can pack and unpack archives: it can zip and unzip, and it also supports unrar. There’s a properties dialog, plus the ability to change permissions.
The app can delete files (it does not use a recycle bin). It also supports saving shared files received from other apps, sending files via Bluetooth using OBEX, and showing picture thumbnails.
Plugins, account needs, and what costs money
Many connectivity and cloud options are provided through plugins. The listing mentions FTP and SFTP (plugin), WebDAV web folders (plugin), LAN access (plugin), and cloud plugins for Google Drive, Microsoft Live OneDrive, and Dropbox.
Root support is optional for the main functions. The listing explains that root related behavior depends on the SuperUser permission and that it has no effect on non rooted devices.
The developer states there are no in app ads in the app itself. However, there is a link called “Add plugins (download)” in the home folder, and the Play Store treats that link as an ad because it points to other developer apps.
